An introduction to medical marijuana, state legalization and new challenges for employers and employees. Marijuana or cannabis is currently the most commonly used illicit drug in the world and one of the earliest plants cultivated by humans. Early evidence of cannabis use as a medicine has been found in China and India for religious and medicinal uses. Archaeological research shows early civilization cultivation of hemp in India to create a variety of products from ropes, textiles and paper. The different parts of the plant have been used to cure and alleviate ailments across every organ system as early as 4,000 B.C. In countries such as Nepal and China, cannabis seeds are still used today both as a pharmaceutical as well as to enhance food. Europe was introduced to the plant by traders from Asia, but reference to the use of cannabis by the Greeks or Romans was minimal. In the Americas, it is thought that the use of the cannabis plant started in the 16th century specifically in South America, brought in by African slaves and used in spiritual rituals and magical exercises. 1 Eventually by the 19th century, European physicians, an Irish physician Dr. William B.
